Poem by Chuck, from the Sisters for Peace volunteer group

Timothy Nurnberger

I started out on a mission
In North Central South Dakota
To lend a helping hand
To the people of Lakota
The rolling hills and prairie grass
As far as the eye can see
Enveloped the troubles of this land
In the wonders of its beauty
The elders living on this land
Proud and strong are they
Teach young ones here to carry on
And embrace the Lakota way
The children's faces say it all
In a hard untrusting way
While underneath those eyes of steel
Still searching for a brighter day
An earth so dense no plow can till
Digging in the hardened clay
To create a new Pow Wow site
For the sacred Lakota way
Generosity and respect
True wisdom and courage too
Are traditional ways of life
Of the Cheyenne River Sioux
