Silver Lake in Oaxaca 2013 (Blog #1)

Timothy Nurnberger

After a few traveling difficulties, we’ve all finally made it to Oaxaca! Yesterday, after landing and touring the Simply Smiles Center of Operations, we headed to Casa Hogar, the children’s home that inspired Simply Smiles. We all jumped out of the van to see smiling faces and welcoming greetings everywhere. We started to follow the group leaders on a tour of Casa Hogar, but the kids just wanted to play. Soon, everyone was occupied with water guns, soccer balls, crayons, and beads. Each of us immediately had our hands full with forming friendships with the amazing people we met. Nate mentions that half of the kids seemed to want a piggyback ride.

As a water gun fight broke out, the whole group became part of the fun; even Figa, the dog at Casa Hogar, wanted in on the action! Some kids preferred to sit in the shade and make art projects and listen to Charlie, Sarah, and Nacho play the guitar. Emmy’s favorite experience was meeting Denís, a disabled child, and figuring out that he absolutely loved to play with the ukulele. It was cool to communicate even without words.

The kids there seemed to never lose their energy, and none of our volunteers slowed down despite being quite tired. After a long afternoon of fun, we headed back to the Center of Operations for some snacks and some sleep. This morning, we had our first breakfast on site and commenced the day’s work. Just the first day was an amazing experience. We got to meet some awesome people, and see this beautiful place. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the week!
