A Note About In-Kind Gifts

Of course we are always in need of items such as clothing, toys, school supplies, etc. However, we are unfortunately unable to accept donations of items for a variety of reasons. Please allow us to try and explain.

In keeping with Mexican custom’s laws, to get items donated from the United States across the border, we would have to pay much more in custom’s fees than the items were bought for here in the states. With this unfortunate fact being an obstacle for us, we are lucky enough to have Casa Hogar located in an area where we can purchase needed items for the children in Mexico at roughly the equivalent cost of the same items here.

More specifically, in respect to used clothing, there is a law that we cannot bring any quantity of used clothing into Mexico. New clothing (with the tags still on it) is fine, but used clothing cannot pass. The reason for this is that we have access (through thrift-shops, etc.) to innumerable bags of used clothing here in the states that we would pay pennies for. These same items could then be sold in Mexico for ten or twenty dollars a piece. The way the Mexican government deals with this is that they simply close the door to used clothing.

So, with all that said, we cannot accept donations of items for the children. What we can do however, is accept a monetary donation earmarked by the donor for a certain item they would like the children to have; i.e. a bike, clothing, school supplies, etc.

What we would then do is purchase the designated item(s) for the children in Mexico and hand deliver it to them for you. Our policy is then to (to the best of our efforts) send the donor pictures of their item being received/used by the children.

Unfortunately with customs being the way it is, this has proved to be the best and most financially responsible way to provide the children at Casa Hogar with the things they need and deserve.
