They survive off of what everyone else discards.
Mexico is one of the world's largest consumers of soft drinks. With no recycling program, millions of bottles get thrown into the trash. This community of over 125 individuals spends every waking hour picking through the trash looking for plastic bottles, tin cans, and cardboard that they can sell. They may be able to make $1 a day.
Amongst discarded dogs, vultures, medical waste, decaying animals, and the intense Mexican sun, people of all ages search for their livelihood. On one trip to the dump, we saw a woman add some moldy bread to her bag of bottles. Human beings, and especially children, should not have to live like this.
