Sisters for Peace on the Reservation 2013: Blog #2

Day 3 has come and gone! I have made an amazing connection with a little girl named Jaheida. She came to camp yesterday and right away she showed a shyness to all of us new volunteers. Once I was able to establish trust with her, I was able to see her beautiful spirit and her longing for validation. Each activity we did from playing in clay, riding a bike, to water color painting, she would continuously make eye contact with me in search of my approval. When camp started on day 2 and she wasn’t here, I was genuinely sad. Half way through our first project I felt a small tap on my back turned to see her sweet face with a huge smile standing in back of me. It felt amazing to know that the connection I had felt, must have been mutual because she had sought me out when she arrived at camp today.
Knowing that I have connected with this beautiful child and brought joy to her day is truly what this trip is all about for me. If nothing else, I will forever remember her beaming smile and tender spirit.
