MOVE on the Reservation 2013: Wednesday Blog

Timothy Nurnberger

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 We’ve had a busy couple of days, but it has all been so worthwhile. Yesterday was incredible, and the smiles were abundant.

As a group of young college students, our energy is boundless--or so we thought! The kids test that theory every day, and by the end of the night we’re happily exhausted. We’re so glad that they’ve opened up to us already, allowing us to connect with them, love them, and create amazing relationships and memories.

This trip is helping to increase our awareness of the difficulties that are present inside our own borders. And it is because of our youth that we are determined to create change. We want the people of La Plant to have the same opportunities as we do. We’re not unrealistic; we don’t think this will happen in our short week. But with each small step, whether it be painting a wall or hosting a town-wide breakfast, we hope we are initiating a sense of community and worth within the hearts of each person.

When we are not working throughout the day, we become “professional” dancers by night. Last night commenced the first annual Simply MOVE Just Dance-a-thon! So far, the competition has been pretty fierce. It’s a tough call for whether a MOVE member or Simply Smiles staff person will win. We’ll keep you posted on the results!

It’s time to get ready for Waffle Wednesday, which will hopefully bring in a large community turnout so that we can spend time speaking to the elders of the community as well as play with the children. Until next time, keep smiling.
